Cold Canine Comforts

Ice Cubes? for dog? Yes. Even ice cubes, if apportioned fairly to canines, can keep them happy and contented. Is there a larger truth hidden somewhere here?

All of our dogs instinctively come to attention at the sound of the refrigerator door opening - they never know when human might eye a left over , reject it, and then split it three ways, and none of them wants to miss the moments, however rare.

Why, though, does our young male hound fairly fly to my side at the sound of ice cubes popping from the tray?

What could be colder, more tasteless, or less satiating than ice to a canine fond of a bit of warm gravy over his dinner? Still, Allie insists of a cube of his own to crunch whenever we cool our drinks.

Our refrigerator is an older model purchased at an auction for a mere $5. It is, surprisingly, a wholly reliable appliance.

Once Allie became a member of our household, the one tray of ice that it used to make began to be shared three ways….. then four, and finally five as our other two dogs, who had never before looked twice at ice, demanded to receive a cube as a matter of principle.

And so this is how it goes - we cool our water or sodas with a few cubes each and toss one to Allie, standing agog with expectation.

As he shatters the cube with unbridled enthusiasm, our black Lab ambles to the scene. Susie sits stoically to receive her fair share, which she (equally stoically) crunches and ingests. Her pained visage shows that this is a burden to be borne for protocol’s sake.

She seems to believe that if one dog gets something that the others don’t share in all privileges could disappear down the slippery slope to favouritism.

Oscar, the eldest of the three and a border collie mix, stares expectantly from a throw, unwilling to move an inch towards such unrewarding largesse - but clearly invested in his due share.

Completely helpless before my animal’s manipulations, I actually bring an ice cube to Oscar’s rug, laying it by his side. He is satisfied as he jealously guards its melting.

The whole scene suddenly brought to mind one of my favourite literary passages - from Betty Smith’s classic novel, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, about an impoverished couple and their two children.

It begins, “There was a special Nolan idea about the coffee. It was their one great luxury.” The text continues to describes how Mama Nolan makes one great pot of coffee in the morning to which her children are always welcome, although mild can be added only three times a day.

The boy, Neeley, merely sips at his coffee, and then spreads and enjoys his allotment of condensed mild on bread.

The novel’s heroine, Francie, never drinks a bit of coffee. She simply pours her share luxuriantly down the drain.

As Mama Nolan explains, “Francie is entitled to one cup each meal like the rest. If it makes her feel better to throw it away than to drink it, all right.”

Our rituals with the ice seem trivial against Nolan’s poverty, not to mention the inequities of the world today.

Yet I can’t get away from the idea that some kernel of a solution to larger problems could lie in the way scant resources come to be fairly apportioned and appreciated at the household level - even ice among canines.

  1. Starbucks Love Said,

What is causing my gooey diarrhea? (TMI)?
Could I have food poisoning? I just got back from an 8 day trip in Mexico on Sunday night. On Sunday I felt fine up until about 7pm when I started feeling really gassy and was farting a lot. I then felt the urge to go #2 but being on an airplane I just couldn’t get the urge to go. Then, when I did need to go I couldn’t — the new policy of no one moving out of their seat the last 1 hour of flight. I even begged the flight attendant who said no. Well, once we got off the plane I couldn’t go either — I had to rush through customs/immigration to catch my connecting flight (which if it weren’t for me RUNNING, i would have missed the flight home!). Well once I finally got home & into the comforts of my own private restroom I basically had really bad diarrhea from holding it, obviously. Well I took some pepto and went to bed and woke up feeling fine — except now I had a bad head cold. I took sudafed and the next day, tues, i woke up fine. Today is weds and I woke up at 6am with a horrible migraine (and I suffer for the past 10yrs with these and this was definitely an 8 out of 10 in pain). I popped 2 excedrin, sipped some soup broth and waited for the pain to disappear. 1 hour later I rushed to the bathroom to go #2 again… thinking to myself, oh great not again! Then I was fine, thinking okay maybe it was just from the excedrin or soup broth. But another hour later and I’m back in the bathroom, but this time it was really gooey and watery when I went to wipe & now I’ve got the chills like crazy. Yesterday I did have a pressure/pain in my lower stomach area (kind of where my waistband for my jeans sit) and I’m not overweight by any means… I’m a female, 24 and about 145lbs. I tried googling suggestions for what this could be but kept coming up with references to canines! LoL…

I haven’t had any alcohol since Sunday. I’ve been drinking water, hot tea & cocoa since Sunday. I haven’t eaten anything out of the ordinary and have been eating a lot of veggies & rice and toast. My husband & I are also trying to conceive our first child, but I doubt this has anything to do with my pain.

  4. Free2Day Said,

Trying to conceive your first child…..

    Been to Mexico…..

I would, if I were you, perform a Parasitic Cleanse with your husband as well. Include digestive cleanse as well for you and your husband before conceiving. Wait at least 6 months to past to get all of the herbs and cleansers out of your system before conception. It will interfere with things if you don’t wait.

Depending where you were in Mexico, you may have picked up a bug (bacteria) or a parasite.

You can create some Poor Man’s Penicillin by buying a bottle of Apple Cider with mother, place 5 to 8 crushed and skinned cloves of organic garlic into the bottle along with the garlic juice. Allow the bottle to sit for 3 days or until the garlic bulbs sink to the bottom of the bottle. Shake the bottle real good each day of the 3 day curing period.

After curing, take 1 tablespoon 3 times per day for about a week.

Now in the mean time, you will need to start something to protect yourself while the ACV is curing. Wash and cut up some lemons, limes and grapefruit. Place them with their rinds intact into the blender. Blend and pour into a picture. (rinds included) Take a glass when you get up and when you go to bed. With-in a couple of days the oil should begin to separate from the water. That oil is what you want to drink as well. You’ll see the oil floating to the top or trapped in between the water and rinds.

It will be a good idea to begin your Digestive Cleanse first then the Parasitic Cleanse then repeat the Digestive Cleanse again. The reason for these actions is to get at the parasite that may be attached to the wall of your intestines. Cleaning out your gut will help expose them and bathe them with anti-parasitic herbs. Once they are dead, you can flush them out with a second cleansing.

I hope you and your husband perform this before they (critters) get into your blood stream and move somewhere else….

    Hope this helps…..

P.S. Yes….you can past parasites to your baby being formed in your womb. This can lead to a deformed baby or other horrible things. Please do not go overboard and decide to take these herbs during pregnancy. These herbs will interfere with your babies proper development. Nothing but food and pre-natal vitamins should be consumed while pregnant.
