An Afternoon In The Garden

An Afternoon In The Garden

Elvis - An Afternoon In The Garden Previously unreleased. Mixed from the original 16 track tapes for superb quality. Features the complete afternoon performance from New York’s famous Madison Square Garden concert arena on June 10, 1972. In June 1972, Elvis Presley returned to New York City for his first performances there since an Ed Sullivan Show appearance in late 1956. His shows at Madison Square Garden were, in fact, his first full concerts in New York: During previous visits to the Big Apple, Elvis Presley had only performed a few numbers in television studios. Accordingly, Elvis’ four shows at Madison Square Garden were the subject of mammoth hype, with a live album to be released one week after the stint ended. That album, Elvis As Recorded At Madison Square Garden, was recorded during the evening show on Saturday, June 10. Earlier that day Elvis performed a matinee, which RCA also recorded; that show is now released on this CD, An Afternoon In The Garden (although three songs from this performance appear on ELVIS-A LEGENDARY PERFORMER VOL. 4). The matinee, like the evening show, features a mix of Elvis hits and songs first popularized by other artists, such as ‘For the Good Times’ (Ray Price, Kris Kristofferson) and ‘Proud Mary’ (Creedence Clearwater Revival). In fact, the lineup of songs on the two albums is nearly identical: the performances vary only slightly but An Afternoon In The Garden is the recomeded purchase! Elvis - An Afternoon In The Garden - Elvis Presley CD 2001: Also sprach Zarathustra - That’s All Right - Proud Mary - Never Been To Spain - You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me - Until It’s Time For You To Go - You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’ - Polk Salad Annie - Love Me - All Shook Up - Heartbreak Hotel - Teddy Bear / Don’t Be Cruel - Love Me Tender - Blue Suede Shoes - Reconsider Baby - Hound Dog - I’ll Remember You - Suspicious Minds - Introductions by Elvis - For The Good Times - An American Trilogy - Funny How Time Slips Away - I

Does anyone know how old you have to be to rent a room at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York?

A friend and I are planning to stay in New York City this weekend and we have our eye on this hotel. I’m 18 and he’s 17. Will they allow me to rent the room as long as I’m 18, or do you have to be older?

Some places require that someone be at least 21 or older so you should probably call and check to see just in case.

Chet Baker in New York [Bonus Track] (CD)

Chet Baker in New York [Bonus Track] (CD)

Chet Baker’s West Coast cool comes to the Big Apple on Chet Baker in New York. The project would be Baker’s first — in a four album deal — with the Big Apple-based Riverside Records. The bicoastal artist incorporates his decidedly undernourished sound and laid-back phrasing into the styling of Al Haig (piano), Johnny Griffin (tenor sax), Paul Chambers (bass), and Philly Joe Jones (drums). The results are uniformly brilliant as Baker’s cool-toned solos fly and bop with authority around the equally impressive supporting soloists. Conversely, the same cohesive unity continues on the introspective numbers that are more akin to Baker’s California cool. Undoubtedly one of the charms of this collection is the distinct choice of material. Running the gamut from the relaxed and soothing “Polka Dots and Moonbeams” and equally serene “Blue Thoughts” at one end of the spectrum to the percolating and driving intensity of “Hotel 49″ on the other. This track features each quintet member taking extended solos corralling together at the head and again at the coda for some intense bop interaction. Especially ferocious is Philly Joe Jones, who could easily be mistaken for Keith Moon, Ginger Baker, or even Gene Krupa with his cacophonous solo that never strays from the beat or loses its sense of swing. Perhaps the best meshing of styles can be heard on the Miles Davis composition “Solar.” This “best-of” candidate refers to both Chambers’ and Jones’ concurrent involvement with Davis. The churning backbeat likewise propels the melody and ultimately the performers into reaching beyond their individual expertise and into an area of mutual brilliance. Chet Baker in New York is a highly recommended entry into Baker’s catalog. It should also be noted that these same sides were issued in 1967 as Polka Dots and Moonbeams on the Jazzland label. [The 2001 20-bit remaster contains a bonus performance of "Soft Winds" from the same September 1958 recording sessions that yielded this album.]

Have Fun In Las Vegas, And Don’t Break The Bank On A Hotel

Las Vegas is variously described as the ’sin city’, ‘the city that never sleeps’ or ‘the gamblers’ paradise’. It is however, most famous for it’s ‘quickie marriages’ which have bestowed marital status to many a Hollywood star - overnight. Whatever it is that drives you to take a trip to Las Vegas for the first time, a quick appraisal of the five points below could save you much of the time and agony over what to see and most importantly, the money you’d spend unnecessarily, if not forewarned. As they say, forewarned is forearmed, so here goes.

The early bird catches the worm - literally, in this case! It is advisable to plan early and book the tickets for your journey and make hotel reservations well in advance. Tickets can be booked three days to three weeks in advance and often many airlines offer special fares if tickets are booked early. Hotel reservations, too, are best made early on, to avail of early booking discounts and avoid last minute rush and exorbitant rates.

It pays to be well-shod. The most important item in your suitcase should be a pair of very good, comfortable, running shoes. While it may seem very glamorous to strut down the streets in those high heels, the concrete or stone surfaces you’d encounter in most places you visit are not exactly studio ramps and ill-fitting shoes could dampen your spirits and enthusiasm, faster than you could say ‘Las Vegas’. Exploring the hotels and their many attractions would be a pleasure in snug shoes.

Be at the scene of the action! Most of the attractions in Las Vegas are on and around the Las Vegas strip, so staying in a hotel in this area will mean easy access to all the happening sites and places. Some of the hotels on the strip are Bellagio, MGM Grande, Mirage, Alladin, Flamingo, New York New York, Treasure Island etc. The attractions here include the fountains of the Bellagio, the lion habitat at the MGM Grande, the white tigers at the Mirage and the pirate show at the Treasure Island. Thus, staying in a hotel on the Las Vegas strip would ensure that you don’t run up extra expenses on transport to see those places and you could very well visit the pirates, lions or tigers for breakfast, lunch or dinner as it were.

Live it up, through your stomach. If you’re going to Las Vegas, you’d do well to leave your Atkins diet safely behind at home. Las Vegas is a gastronome’s delight and offers some of the world’s best restaurants and buffets. The buffet at the Bellagio and the Spice-Market Buffet at the Aladdin are absolute must-tries. There is a wide choice in the buffets to suit the tastes of all the members of your family and the rates are quite reasonable so it suits all pockets. So while in Las Vegas - GORGE!

Have fun - cheap! You don’t have to go bankrupt to have fun in Las Vegas. It is a city that offers entertainment, both to those looking to blow up millions for thrills and also to those who’d rather enjoy the more sedate and affordable attractions. In fact, many of the shows you could enjoy with your family are free. Some of these shows are the Fountain display in front of the Bellagio, the pirate show at Treasure Island, Rain Storm at the Dessert Passage, circus acts at Circus Circus and human statues at the Venetian. Besides these, you could catch the lions in their natural surroundings at the MGM Grande or the white tigers at the Mirage. Different hotels also offer displays on selected themes, from time to time, which add to all the attractions.
