I want to be the tour guide @ New York for my parents. I need to organize a 3 day tour. Where do I start?

I’m taking my parents to visit New York for the first time. I want to do it by myself… We are going to be there 3 entire days. I will like to take the bus and subway to see the important places in the City.. Will definitely go to see the Statue of Liberty in the ferry.. and also the wax museum.
Any suggestion how to organize my tour? We are on the ‘budget’, don’t want to hire a tour guide… We are staying close to Times Square. Not sure where to start… please any advise?

Here’s a good place to start plus all the tools you’ll need to organize your own tour. You can also save money on admission to just about everything (including the Statue of Liberty & Madame Tussauds Wax Museum). There’s also a page dedicated to free things to do in NYC. http://www.nyctouristcenter.com

I’d personally devote one day in each part if NYC to save on travel time (uptown, downtown, midtown). For example, you could spend one entire day downtown, visiting the Statue of Liberty, Wall Street, Ground Zero, Chinatown, etc. and another day uptown (Central Park, museums, etc.) and one day in midtown (Empire State building, Times Square, etc.).

Also, pick up a metro card for each of you so you can ride the subways and buses as much as you need. Unfortunately, they don’t offer a three day pass, but you can buy a 7 day or 1 day unlimited fun pass and still save time & money. Here’s more info about metro cards (pricing, where to buy, etc.): http://www.mta.info/metrocard/mcgtreng.htm#unlimited

Good luck!

Okay, you’re going for 3 days and you’re on a budget. Here’s what you do.

Don’t hire a tour guide. Instead be your own tour guide. You can purchase a guide book a few weeks before your trip and study it (cover to cover if you’ll like).

Second, in regard to the Statue of Liberty. Forget taking the ferry to the Liberty Island, which cost $15 a person. Instead, take the Staten Island Ferry, which is free. The ferry passes by the Statue on its way to and from Staten Island, which is on of the five boroughs of New York City.

Since you’re going to be taking public transit, my person favorite, here is a big time money saver. Purchase a 1-day Fun Pass unlimited ride MetroCard for each day you’re in town. The 1-day pass cost $8.25 a person, per day and its an excellent way to get around the city.

If you’re going to be doing a lot of walking, I would recommend having a good pair of shoes. That’s because New York City, in particular Manhattan, is a walking city and comfortable shoes are highly recommended.

In regards to where to start. I would recommend starting off in Midtown, which includes Times Square, for the first day. Most of the landmarks, such as Bryant Park and the Empire State Building are with walking distance to the "Crossroads of the World."

On the second day, consider taking a trip to Lower Manhattan and take tour of the Wall Street area. If you walk up lower Broadway, you can look down at the stone granite plaques of some of the famous people who have march in the Canyon of Heroes parade over the last 220 years.

Speaking of stone granite plaques, a new one was just added yesterday right outside of the Woolworth Building at 320 Broadway, honoring the New York Yankees’ 27th World Series Championship. Beside, if you check my blog you can find a few report on the ceremony.

Finally, on day three. You can take tour of Central Park, the Upper West and East Side, as well as the museums. Most of the museum have special days where you can get in either free or for a small donation.

I hope this infomration is very helpful. I hope this information was very helpful. If you have any questions or need travel directions while in town, just drop me a line by clicking on the avatar and e-mail icon in the profile. I’ll be glad to help.

    Good luck
